5 Instagram Accounts to Follow
With 800 million monthly active users, Instagram is one of the biggest social media platforms for sharing visual content. For artists and creatives, it’s a particularly great way to share their work and process online in an open and informal way to a potentially large audience. Given the many artists creating content both on and outside the platform, how do you know who to follow and how can you find the best of the best without spending hours trawling through hashtags and lists?
One way is to follow well-established art and design blogs (or magazines) on Instagram, taking advantage of their expertise to fill your feed with tastefully curated, high-quality work, as well as coverage of the latest trends and up-and-coming creatives. Often, the creatives responsible for the work are also mentioned in the post, so if you like what you see, it’s simple to click through to their personal page and follow them to see more.
If you’re looking to keep up-to-date with the current creative sphere, or just need some visual inspiration, whether in fine art, illustration, graphic design, photography or pretty much anything else creative, here is a list of five of the best creative inspiration accounts to follow on Instagram:
Trendland is an online magazine covering (as its name suggests) trends in various creative and cultural fields. Established in 2006, the site publishes daily articles on topics such as fine art and illustration, travel and food, photography and video, interior design and architecture, as well as graphic design. This account often showcases artists and interesting creative projects through image-heavy, text-light posts, essentially creating a distilled version of their website content. Their Instagram feed leans towards the surreal but photorealistic, often featuring mind-boggling photography, 3D art, photo manipulations and installations.
Follow for: Tastefully surreal imagery and Dali-esque inspiration.
Founded in 2007, It’s Nice That consists not only of a popular Instagram account, but also a website that is updated daily, a bi-annual magazine, a summer symposium and a monthly talk event for creatives. Their Instagram feed has a modern art and graphic design feel, featuring lots of bold colours, simple designs and sans serif fonts. In addition to artist features, there are also some fun regular series, such as their Friday Mixtape (a weekly playlist), Nicer Tuesdays (artist interviews) and Weekly Comic (an artist-contributed mini comic).
Follow for: Quirky contemporary art and in-depth written content to accompany posts.
Another well-established and popular site, Colossal is one of the largest art, design and culture blogs currently out there, reaching an audience of 2-3 million per month. The blog was launched in 2010 by writer and curator Christopher Jobson, and has since received many an accolade for its coverage of artists and trends across the fields of street art, photography, crafts and illustration, among others. Reaching over 168,000 followers as of writing, Colossal’s Instagram feed composes an excellent selection of work, ranging from murals to papercutting to topiary, much of which features amazingly intricate detail.
Follow for: Sophisticated and stunning artwork, street art and crafts with an emphasis on painstaking detail.
By far the most popular Instagram account on our list with over 1 million followers, Juxtapoz is a monthly arts magazine founded in 1994 covering a wide range of creative work, from fine art and gallery exhibitions to contemporary sculpture and installation. While their Instagram content is not as thorough or substantial as that of their magazine or website, it does form a well-curated and interesting, self-contained stream of content, often posting entertaining news, pictures or videos in bitesize form, and seemingly with a bias towards the graphic and grotesque.
Follow for: Exhibition coverage, interesting video clips and dark and macabre artwork.
Spelled with seven O’s (we counted!), Booooooom is a Canada-based arts and culture website launched in 2008 by artist Jeff Hamada. Featuring minimalist design with spacious white backgrounds and tasteful black fonts, their posts are concise and image-heavy, most often covering the work of up-and-coming artists, photographers and designers, as well as short films and animations, and even occasionally music. Their Instagram displays a similar taste for minimalism and subtlety, predominantly showcasing photography, and with a curious tendency to favour work contrasting spacious backgrounds with single, small points of focus, to stunning effect.
Follow for: Strikingly beautiful and thought-provoking photography.
While this is by no means an exhaustive list, we hope that following these accounts will give you a great introductory insight into the world of art on Instagram! Even if none of these accounts match your taste, there’s bound to be an artist or Instagram account out there that does, so don’t be afraid to keep exploring!
